When General Hooker took command of the Army of the Potomac, his realistic policy toward recreation for the troops changed Washington overnight. Red-light districts flourished. Tradition strongly insists that it was this benevolant commanding general who gave his name to the slang expression that we all know today as "hooker" signifying both an abandoned woman and a drink of whiskey neat.
