Southern troops were not always in such sore straits. In the days after after the fall of Vicksburg, when "Major Purvis" (George any kin?) a Scotish veteran of that seige, had become the Quartermaster of the Sub-Department of Miss, statistics of supply were staggering. Purvis once reported beginning at midnight the task of driving his crews to butcher and scald a thousand hogs for the next days distribution to the troops. His bakers turned out a thousand loaves of bread each day, well at least for a while.
Can't say if he is any kin or not. As far as I can get on my family line is 1850 Marion County, Miss. census. After that there is not enough information to connect me to any particular Purvis line.
