george, there is a new book that just came out on ship island. that list the men who were inprisoned there. dont recall the name. we are selling it at camp moore. just came back from ship island, they had a listing of men who died there, around 200. the graves now are under water.
The link I posted has a list of dead. Not sure if it is complete, but it is from the monument erected by the UDC. A fellow is looking for a Love or Dill who was held as a POW but believed to have escaped. Is it possible you look it up for me???
i know, thats why i put off buying one. but will bite the bullet because of the two that i had there. but am willing to share information out of it with anyone. hope to pic it up sat.
no. my uncle was there for two months, then transferred to elmayria in new york. my gggrandfather was there for about 6 months, i beleive then transferred to camp townsend near vicksburg where he was exchanged a few days later..i do have there military service records and in some cases there pension records, where they applied for one. my gggrandfather did not apply for one. my gggrandfather was in miles la. legion. paroled at port hudson. he evidently went back cause he was recaptured about a year later. then sent to ship island. pvt. john frank brimberry. my gg uncle, johns brother-in-law, simeion coates robertson was in wingfields 3rd la cav. paroled at port hudson, rejoined with barlows light artillery. recaptured then sent to ship island, then about two months later sent to elmyira up in new york.
Good deal that you have their records. We can still provide CSRs for active SHAPE members free of charge.
Sounds like they went from the frying pan to the fire by ending up at Hellmira. Most folks talk about the abuses of the south or more specifically Andersonville and at the same time ignore the abuses of Elmira, Douglas and Chase.
i can. just give me a week or so. it has several other films on this 2 disc set. also i picked up the book on ship island. ever need a name look up let me know. has listing from a number of the confederate states, plus some civilians glad to do a look up.
