-Confederate History Month 2010 is nearing the end. I have touched on many subjects this month, but the one subject that tugs at my heart is the story of the Immortal 600. I posted a few letters to show the deliberate abuse these men suffered, yet truth be known I really did not scratch the surface. I suggest every one read the book `”Immortal Captives” by Muriel Phillips Joslyn. Below is a short epitaph written by one of the 600. May they rest in peace.
And thus is the tale of the 600 told-- fourteen have taken the oath, some 125 have been exchanged, one Captain Board is in close confinement, 7 have escaped, 21 have died, 5 were left behind to die, while the balance of us, sick or under the weather, have been thrown in here without money to “root hog or die.”
