Prisoners of War Deaths

Deaths at Rock Island P.O.W. Camp
CUPIT, DANIEL A. CORP
Co.E, 7 MISS.
died 2/26/64

This page will list as many known members of the 7th Mississippi that died in P.O.W. camps as I can locate. Also featured will be the names of the 9th Battallion Sharpshooters as some of these men were originally from the 7th regiment. The list is offered as a resource only. This is a big project and many names will probably be added as we learn more. Therefore if you are seeking an ancestor whom you believe or know to have died in a P.O.W. camp and he isn't listed here please forgive us and point out our error. Any information you can share would be of great benefit to the regimental history. Please also remember this is only a partial list.
NOTE: The text in red color is links to sites that were referenced for this page and are highly recommended!

Records of deaths at Camp Douglas seem to have been "lost" or "misplaced". This camp set the record for the highest rate of death for a one month period among all civil war prison camps north or south. Oak Woods Cemetery in Chicago is home to a monument honoring those "known only to God" who died at Camp Douglas and who are buried there in a mass grave. My own great-grandfather was sent here after the battle of Shiloh.
