In a attempt to cope with the depreviations of war, Southern homemakers served meals of "artifical oysters", gratted green corn mixed with egg and butter, rolled in batter, and pan fried.

I never knew that. I'll have to research that more. I knew about "biloxi bacon" but this is new.
