Among the dead at Shiloh, the South lost Hugh McVey, an Irishman well over 70 years of age (some say almost 80) a veteran of Waterloo who had enlisted in Company D, 4th Kentucky, CSA.

An eleven year old buglar in the same battle turned the tide for the Orphan Brigade when its flag fell and an old cannon was lost. "Little Oirish" took the banner to the captured gun, mounted it, and while screaming and waving the flag, prompted a Confederate charge

Exactly right. In researhing the 7th Miss., have found a 70 year who went along to take care of his grandsons. My youngest grandfather served with the 24th Miss. Cav.at the age of 14. No sir age didn't matter.
