This is a reply to Mark's post this morning.

I also saw in the newspaper in the last few days that in Selma they are wanting to change the name of Jeff Davis Street.

Yes, they want to change (or have changed) it to honor a man named Chestnut, a "civil rights" attorney. You know, my mother was right - and she quoted from her father whom she didn't believe either until she grew older. I considered her very racist in her sentiments, but now I understand much better than I once did. Her motto about folks who are just not "up" to handling power without losing their heads was, "Put a beggar on horseback and he'll ride it to death." From what I see of large cities where blacks gain political power, it is soon ALL black - mayor, police and fire commissioners, etc. - and from that comes chaos (see New Orleans).

I don't know why this is so. I tend NOT to want to think it's a racial thing - but facts and history seem against any other point of view. A few, okay. A majority? Well, I leave it for folks to make their own judgment, but it's obvious that what you're seeing here is definitely an undeniable result of the prevailing situation in Selma, at least. How sad that we are deviating so far from the culture of character and not race preached by MLK. Right now, our society is all about race and little or nothing about character.

I'll bet MLK is spinning in his grave because of some of these actions.
