General Nathan Bedford Forrest, CSA had twenty-nine horses shot from beneath him during the war years.

On June 14, 1863, he was shot by a disgruntled subordinate, Andrew W. Gould, whom Forrest then mortally wounded with his penknife.

Twice severely wounded in battle he quickly recovered and was on a mount soon.
